Today, we celebrate the release of Cane | Fire by internationally celebrated writer and visual artist Shani Mootoo. This collection of poems navigates a complex communion of past and present, drawing on autobiography and the shifting geographies of Mootoo’s life. Read on to learn all about this immersive new work and for information on upcoming events with Shani Mootoo, including a double book launch for Cane | Fire and Shannon Webb-Campbell’s Lunar Tides!
Happy Book Birthday to Cane | Fire by Shani Mootoo! This vivid poetry collection comes on the heels of Mootoo’s 2020 Scotiabank Giller Prize shortlisted novel Polar Vortex and marks Mootoo’s long-awaited return to poetry. Cane | Fire, which features a dozen full-colour reproductions of Mootoo’s original artworks, has been showing up on many Spring 2022 preview lists, including Quill & Quire and CBC Books. It has also been the centrepiece of some compelling conversations, including “Of What Use is Poetry at a Time Like This?”, a dialogue between Mootoo and Linda Morra on the Getting Lit with Linda podcast.
Cane | Fire invites the reader into a highly personal world, where details from the past emerge to provoke striking images and reform “scattered time.” Akin to a poetic memoir, this evocative, sensual collection follows the narrator as she moves from Ireland to San Fernando, and finally to Canada. The reinterpretations and translation of this journey and its associated family history give meaning to the present and we begin to understand how a life can not only be shaped, but even reimagined.
