STEVE McCAFFERY’s ALICE IN PLUNDERLAND – APPENDIX I: A GLOSSARY OF TERMS

In anticipation of this week’s dual launches of Steve McCaffery’s new book, Alice in Plunderland, illustrated by Clelia Scala (NOW AVAILABLE), BookThug is proud to present a special appendix to this spectacular new take on the Lewis Carroll classic, Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland (which celebrates its 150th anniversary this year). The book launches tonight (Wednesday, March 18th) at Videofag in Toronto, and Thursday, March 19th at the Niagara Artists Centre in Saint Catharines (see below for more event information).

Recall: the story of a precocious little girl named Alice and her meandering adventures in an fantastical underground world. In Plunderland, on the other hand, Alice and her famous cohorts are infused with characteristics associated with the word “plunder”—a word that for Steve McCaffery conveys notions of theft, drug addiction, looting, and civil disorder. Wonderland’s coterie of anthropomorphised eccentrics are here transformed into a band of sketchy addicts and street hustlers, their familiar songs and hijinks mired in drugged-out absurdity. The wonder has turned to plunder as the day-dreaming Alice from Carroll’s original—a thoughtful young girl, dubious of lessons, fond of cake—is recast in Plunderland as Alice, the day-tripping dope fiend: an “unrepentant crackhead” with the scabby resilience of a rock-bottom junkie with a habit the size of the GTA. [Read excerpts from Alice in Plunderland here and here.

In Plunderland, street slang and drug lingo abound. To aid the understanding of the less-initiated, the author has kindly provided a glossary of Plunderland terms, reproduced here (below) for the benefit of the general reader. The “Short Glossary of Plunderland Terms for Grown-Ups” is your authoritative guide to the duplicitous, drug-addled romp that is Steve McCaffery’s Alice in Plunderland (on sale now).
