Meet Our Newest Team Member: Sabrina

Hello readers! My name is Sabrina, and I’m so excited to be joining the Book*hug team as the Marketing and Communications Coordinator.

In 2019, I graduated from the University of Toronto with a degree in English and Cinema Studies, and I’ve been involved in books ever since. I’ve worked for Penguin Random House Canada, interned for BUST Magazine based in New York, and managed a rare bookstore in Toronto’s east end. Along with my new role at Book*hug, I’m a bookseller and events coordinator at Flying Books and a freelance copy editor.

Some of my favourite books are How Should a Person Be? by Sheila Heti, What We All Long For by Dionne Brand, The Best of Everything by Rona Jaffe, Transit by Rachel Cusk, and Autumn by Ali Smith. I’m really looking forward to Book*hug’s release of Marta Balcewicz’s Big Shadow. I’ve never read a book that so accurately portrays how uncomfortable, and sometimes painful, it can be to navigate certain power dynamics as a young woman. The writing is nuanced and insightful, and doesn’t fall into any of the overdone tropes that I’ve seen in a lot of contemporary coming of age fiction. The way that Judy, Balcewicz’s protagonist, understands her experiences through moments in film was also really relatable for me as a reader.

Another one of my big interests is in film. While my most watched movie is definitely 10 Things I Hate About You, I also really love the films of Agnès Varda, Whit Stillman, and Èric Rohmer. Rohmer made a few series of films throughout his career, and I’m almost finished his Tales of the Four Seasons. With each of his films that I’ve seen, I’m constantly inspired by the empathy he shows for his characters.

Happy spring and happy reading!
