women & roosters: The Playlist

women & roosters: The Playlist is here!

Fenn Stewart has curated a playlist of songs that inspired the writing of her brand new poetry collection women & roosters. Fenn has also written an introduction detailing the playlist’s origins as a soundtrack for running in the forest, with detailed notes. We hope you enjoy! Take it away Fenn!

When I was writing women & roosters, and living through the stuff that it’s about, I was running a lot in the woods.* Then I got long covid in 2022, and I couldn’t run the way I wanted to (my long covid took the form of dysautonomia, tachycardia, & myositis). I kept trying to run, but it didn’t go super well (neither did I, haha). So this is my running playlist from those days — the fast days, and the slow days, and the long-covid-panic-attack days when my heart rate would hit 200 bpm.

Roses (Imanbek Remix)—SAINt JH—for when you have and/or need energy
Halo (Cover)—L.P—for running when sad / mad
Oxy Music—Alex Camero—anytime, really
It’s Never Over (Hey Orpheus)—Arcade Fire— for running when wistful or mildly anguished
Godsend—Beat Happening—for when you’re going through some stuff and/but some of it is really good stuff
Honey—070 Shake, Ralphy River, Hack & Tree—see “It’s Never Over,” same note
Work (R3hab Remix)—Rihann—this one is for running while happy
Duniya—Panjabi M— this one is for running up hills
Running up that hill—Kate Bush—this one is no good for running up hills; better for warm up / cool down
This Feeling (feat. Kelsea Ballerini)—Afrojack & Disto Remi—this one is for sprints
Cola—Camelphat, Elderbrook—for when you need to zone out / lock in or like for that bit 3/4 of the way thru, before your kick (assuming you have one) but after you’re already starting to wear out
Boasty—WILEY, Stefflon Don, Sean Paul, Idris Elba—for warm up or just anytime you’re cheerful

*At the time (2020 to 2023), I was mostly running near the Musqueam reserve in Pacific Spirit Park, on Musqueam, Squamish, and Tsleil-Waututh territory. The poems in the first part of the book take place in some other woods, further north: on Sla-dai-aich / tay’stay’ič (Denman Island), part of the unceded territories of the Pentlach, K’ómoks, Homalco, Klahoose, Qualicum, Shíshálh, Tla’amin, We Wai Kai, and Wei Wai Kum peoples.
